About the teacher
When I first tried to design my own day planner, I found many of the existing tutorials were complicated and rigid. So I spent hours fine-tuning, calling professional printers and wrestling with InDesign to come up with a streamlined process anyone could use. It originally launched in 2013 and has been completely updated for 2018.

Frequently Asked Questions
This course uses Adobe InDesign, which is a paid product.
Past students have taken advantage of the Adobe InDesign Creative Cloud free trial to design their first planner at no cost, if they complete the design during the trial period. A suggested activation time is included in the lessons, so you don't need to worry about timing this yourself.
You can also easily purchase access to Adobe InDesign for one month ($29 USD), and then cancel when your design is finished.
Yes! In fact, if you're a new designer there's a simple way for you to create a completed design quickly: Customize the templates that come with the course. This makes your learning curve faster, and the design process much less intimidating than if you were starting from scratch. Kyla has been teaching complete beginners through screencasts for years, and the click-by-click guidance makes learning simple. Any finished designs you make are yours for personal or commercial use, even if they're based on our templates.
If you're printing at home, it's easiest to complete double-sided printing successfully using a letter size (8.5" x 11") . The instructions on how to do this are included with the course. Instructions on how to print other sizes at home are not included.
If you want to print in another size at home, the recommended approach is to cut down your paper first, adjust your printer settings to take smaller sheets of paper and then use the same method as taught in the course.
Printing in other sizes requires more experimentation and adapting the instructions that are included with the course. It's important to remember that if you print in odd sizes, you may need to cut your pages to size. Depending on the amount of pages in your project, it can be very time consuming.
No, a printed planner is not included in the course. Planner Camp gives you the resources to make a custom day planner, and to prep your files so you can have them printed or print them at home. It's up to you to stick with the learning curve, complete your project and print it.
It doesn’t have to be. If you design your pages so you can print them at home, use a weekly layout instead of a daily layout (i.e. less pages) and don't need to buy a new ink cartridge for your printer, your planner pages could be completely free. If you're going to design a full color, spiral bound one-day per page planner it's safe to budget between $100-$150.
The course covers strategies to minimize printing costs as a core part of its approach. It also reminds students that printers provide estimates, and encourages that they request them.
Because but this course is exactly what I wish existed when I started designing my own day planners. Designing for print is specialized and day planner design is even more specialized than that. That's a high barrier to entry.
I'm a self taught designer and love a challenge. But finding a way to easily date a day planner took taking several courses on InDesign, dozens of hours and evenutally collaborating with professional print designers. That's crazy!
I love the idea that if there's something you want to see more of in the world, you should go make it. Planner Camp is my version of that and including the rights to the templates was the best way I could think to make the course really complete.
The customizable templates included with Planner Camp are:
- Daily layout (One day per page)
- Weekly layout (One week on two pages)
- Monthly layout (One month on two pages)
- Annual/Perpetual Calendar Layout (One year on four pages, with lined areas.)
All templates are available in A4, letter and half-letter sizes. All can be used for personal or commercial use.
All templates are available in A4, letter and half-letter sizes.
You can change any aspect of them that you like, from the colours, spacing and fonts to the size and placement of any of the elements. Nothing in the templates is locked down or restricted, so you can adjust as much or as little as you like.
No. Advanced Planner Camp students can use InDesign to create anything they imagine- so it's likely that they can imagine problems that we haven't anticipated or found solutions for.
What the course does include is a discussion area for questions where we'll do our best to answer and update for issues students encounter. There are also links to other helpful resources provided inside of the course.
We offer refunds within 14 days of purchase if the lessons with the templates have not been accessed. Once the lesson that includes the template files has been opened, because they're digital files they cannot be returned and are non-refundable.
If you aren't sure about your purchase, be careful not to open the lessons with the template files, titled "How to use the course templates".
